In honor of D-Day and the run in it's name, we also serve who miss days of fun in the sun and fine German food. Yes, as you people suffered through twisting roads, top down sun, wind in your hair (those that have it), I slept soundly, knowing that in a few hours, I would be making sure that CPSB has enough gas to power their generators so that your houses will stay cool this evening. I feel the pain that you felt as the smiles strained the muscles in your faces. I know that the sun played havoc on your necks and arms as it seared age lines into your skin. Who knows how many people you saved by eating so much that others will be saved from obesity by the lack of remaining food in the restaurant. However, despite all of your suffering, I know that you did well and enjoyed yourselves. This fact alone gives me the right to be jealous and envious. Hopefully, sometime in the near future, my schedule (pronounced shed-yule as I forgot to tell you to read this with an English accent) will permit me to accompany the group "on the road again". I know that I will see you at the June meeting. Keep zoom-zooming with honor!!!

This is becoming a problem. I may have to quit work the way things are going. However, as I keep my upper lip stiff, I once again served my club members by keeping their houses cool. In this case I missed a nice evening run and probably some real good catfish. If there was only some mutual suffering involved, it wouldn't be so unbearable. I could glean some enjoyment (however perverted it may be) from the tragedy of others. If only someone had their credit card refused, or the restaurant ran out of catsup or the toilet backed up and flooded the place, then I could feel happy about having to miss another event. Unfortunately, all I have heard has been about fun and happiness and thus is the bane of the shiftworker. I guess I will just have to make up for whatever I miss by having extra fun at every event I do get to attend. I still plan on seeing you guys at the meeting on the 22nd, and this time I plan on eating a steak! I will also have to miss the Chicken Fried Steak Run and the Peach Pickin' Party since I work during the one and am committed to celebrating the holiday in small town America during the other. I guess I may have to write about missing those events, too. It seems to give some psychological release. By the way, "Seymour" misses you, too.

Now, because I like Jim and Freda so much, I didn't pray for bad weather or anything like that to inhibit their first big run. However, I must admit that while I was driving to work in the rain with the top down (which is a real hoot!), I was tempted to pray that the same raindrops (keep fallin' on my head) were flooding the roads in the direction of the run. As a news junkie, it would have given me something to watch at work. I could just see some reporter standing in front of the Guadalupe river bank trying to explain why all these little sports cars were floating down the river. He would also try to explain why the owners were still in the cars smiling and waving like they were in a parade. Of course a flash flood would explain the floating cars, but the reason the owners were still in the cars was because they had eaten so much chicken fried steak that they knew they would immediately drown due to the well-known law of all of our parents..."don't go in the water after lunch or you'll die!!!"

I guess that, once again, I missed a really good run and I would have enjoyed gorging myself on one of those big ol' chicken fried steaks from OST. Instead, I worked and settled for Church's Fried Chicken. My regards to all of those who tempted fate and went on a great run despite the threat of inclement weather. I guess I was the only one who got to drive in the rain. It's what they call "just desserts". Well, there is always the Peach Pickin' Party. I'll miss that, too, but at least I'll miss it because I'll be travelin'. 1,000 miles to Clarendon and back just to eat BBQ on the courthouse grounds, watch the parade (every tractor in the county) and go to the rodeo and the dance afterwards. Oh yeah, we do visit the in-laws. Did I say I'd rather pick peaches?

Another one bites the dust! Participation in the Peach Pickin' Party was preferred however, predetermined prominence at the party for pupils of my wife's particular class was the purpose for postponing my partcipation. Yes, this time I didn't have to work but, I did have to accompany my wife to her class reunion type event. Just by looking at the pictures, I can tell that there were those who picked with experience and there were rookies. How many people ate as many as they picked? Does peach juice cause hands to stick to the steering wheel? Can peach fuzz have the same effect as a hair ball? Do peaches grow on bushes or trees? What's the difference in a bush and a tree...does it just depend on how high the first branch is off of the ground? You know that here we have mesquite trees, but in West Texas they're nothing but bushes. I also notice that we seem to be continuing to overindulge in Germanic type food. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but don't we need some variety?

Now I know the driving part was probably very good. Any trip led by Rohm and Barbara is going to entail some good and interesting roads. This was a nice weekend to drive and sweat. So, maybe some of you were able to lose a little weight during the driving portion of the run. If not, maybe you were at least able to break even with all of that good German food and beer! Just keep an open spot for me on the next run. This one has to do with go-karts and junk food. How can anyone miss a run like this. With Wally and Susie leading the way, we'll all revert to our childhood...some more than others. Just remember, those of you who claim to have never had a childhood, now is your chance. I am making plans to attend with my wife, so save a go-kart for me!

John,

As always I love your writeups. Usually we have to wait for the newsletter but now we have this fancy forum that Luther built for us so we can get a little of your humor even if you don't make the run.

Keep up the good work.

Jeff

Persimmons or Peaches?

Well to tell you the truth, they have persimmons and peaches. :D

Seriously though, I concur with Jack. Please keep the posts coming. You sir are gifted with the talent of prose or the gift of gab.

Thanks for the compliments fellas! As much as I like sounding off about all that I have missed, I would much rather be writing about a run in which I was a participant. Looking forward to go-kart night with the Peters. After spending all this time with adults it will be nice to hang around some kids for a change. See ya there!!!!

To take liberties with Benet, garbage, garbage, everywhere and no one took a drink! Garbage, garbage everywhere and all I did was blink! It would only seem right that I should show up to pick up garbage since I do drive by surreptiously at night and throw things out of my car, just so we'll have something to do. However, while all of the community conscious people in the club showed up to do their duty, I was snuggled in bed with visions of sugarplums leaping into my big white garbage bag. Having picked up trash before, I realize that it is just a means to an end. And we all know the end is Grumpy's! I also must say that those orange vests just do not go with my red hair (what's left of it)! Why, what if some of my friends saw me? What if some of my enemies saw me? I would be more of a laughingstock than I am already.

In all seriousness, I had already decided to show up at Jeff's little shindig, but situations cause changes. One of the people I work with found his oldest son shot dead on their ranch around Sinton and needless to say, he will be out of work for a while so, I have to cover for him. I will be working quite a few nights in a row, which is a small price to pay. I ask those of you that will to please keep this family in your prayers. We all hope they make it through this catastrophe with their family intact. Keep on zoomin'!

John,

That is awful. We will certainly be praying for the family.
