Event Reminders

I was going through the "My Settings" of my profile and there was a section on the left called "Event Reminders".

What is that feature and how does it work? Would this somehow remind me of upcoming calendar events?

You can select an event on the calendar to notify you of an event and you have a selection for reminding you from 1 hour to 3 days before the event through your email. I had not seen that before.
